Being a solopreneur I think a lot about how productive I can be. It seems I’m often cracking the whip and over working which means more mistakes and stresses me out. Then I don’t take good care of myself. Then there’s some days where I am distracted all day. The phone is ringing and I answer it (big mistake!). I check my email every time something comes in (mistake again!). I clean the dust bunnies off the floor, round up the drifting fur, count head pins, scan Facebook. Blah Blah Blah. You know the drill.
Recently I listened to a talk given by the famous copywriter Eugene Schwartz about how he worked. He worked intensely for 4 hours every day of the week and he would set a timer for 33 minutes and 33 seconds. When the timer went off he dropped whatever he was doing, even if he was in mid sentence and take a 5 minute break. After the break he’d set his timer again for 33 minutes and 33 seconds.
I decided to give this a try. What could it hurt…right?
Wowza! That shit works! I don’t know why 33.33 is the magic number but I can work for more than 4 hours without feeling shoulder, neck or eye strain. The added bonus is that 5 minute break away from work allows the work to work on itself in the back of my mind. When I get back to work, the ideas are flowing with no effort on my part. I don’t know if there has been any real scientific research done on this kind of thing. I think not. So many of us are over worked at our jobs and we might all be so much more productive if we did this. I believe the quality of both our lives and our work would improve dramatically.
