Yahoo! You’ve found that you love making jewelry and you’re good at it, people love your pieces and you want to make a go at selling your jewelry and starting a business that will pay the bills..or at least pay for an awesome stash.
Where do you begin?
You better begin at the beginning which is developing an offering you enjoy making and that your target market will buy so you can bring the money in. You need to find that profitable sweet spot where you get to do what you love, be yourself and still offer what your customers want and what people will pay you for.
Do your research.
One way to do this is to do your research and see what it is that people are buying and see where it fits in with what you’re doing. Here’s a few handy tools to get you started, first is the Etsy ‘Compare Ideas’ tool that allows you to type in ideas for your products and see which ones will provide you with the most opportunities. Second is the ‘Inspiration’ tool, also on Etsy to give you some ideas based on what people are searching for that have fewer options for buyers. These tools will be helpful to you, even if you don’t want to sell on Etsy.
Dig In.
Another way to dig in a little deeper into this is to make a list of at least 10 things you absolutely love about making jewelry. Any special elements you particularly enjoy working with? Styles you are attracted to? Do you love to do custom work? Weddings? Dream big here and don’t censor yourself, it’s all good.
Next write down at least 10 things that your ideal customer dreams of having. What problems do they need solved? What are their needs around jewelry? Use your imagination but also get used to talking to your customers and target market right now, ask them questions and listen to them carefully.
Go back and look at your two lists, is there anyplace that your favorite things and your ideal customer’s desires are the same? This would be a great place to start developing your jewelry.
In case you’re wondering if this is important, today I did a search on Etsy for jewelry and came up with;
- jewelry 4,108,414 items
Holy crap.
Learning how to market yourself is going to help put you ahead of the game and I’m here to help you do that.
